Why can't I access Tibia and shares on other students' computers any longer?
The WINS service has been decommissioned. You may need to add DNS search domains to your computer to continue to access Windows services.
The Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) provided centralized NetBIOS name resolution for machines on the RHIT network. This allowed access to other computers on campus, such as tibia, through the \\tibia naming convention. Most machines will still be accessible through this method.
Machines that are no longer accessible in this manner may be contacted by using the fully qualified domain name of the machine, such as \\tibia.rose-hulman.edu. Additionally, users will need to define a domain suffix search order to assist in name resolution. If you encounter any difficulties, please contact the Help Desk.
