Network Icons Have Disappeared, Windows Update does not work, Install/Uninstall programs do not work.
The following steps will correct the Windows Update issue. Be warned that the controls used to apply this fix are sensitive and could cause your computer to malfunction if these steps are not followed.
1.) Click Start->Run and type "gpedit.msc" into the Run dialog. Click OK
2.) Navigate to Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies->User Rights Assignment
3.) Find "Bypass Traverse Checking". If the icon shows up as blue 1s and 0s, then you have the Windows Update issue. If not, do not proceed and send us an email.
4.) Open Bypass Traverse Checking
5.) Click "Add user or group" -> "Object Types"
6.) Check "Groups" and hit OK
7.) Click "Location"
8.) Select the name of the local computer (should be "AYERSBW-1" or something similar) and hit OK
9.) In the "Enter the object names to select" field, type "everyone; users" (no quotes, all lower case)
10.) Click "Check names"
11.) Reboot
