What is a VPN, and how is a VPN used at Rose-Hulman?
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a technology that allows a remote user to use the Internet to connect to a corporate network, and once connected, to access services as though he or she was physically located on the network. In addition, all communication between the remote user and the network is encrypted, which keeps sensitive information private as it traverses the Internet.
After a simple software installation and authenticating with his or her Rose-Hulman username and password, the Rose-Hulman VPN allows a remote user to access various campus resources such as Banner, MatLab, AFS, Tibia, and library resources such as ProQuest, EBSCO, IEEE Explore and others as if he or she were on-campus. The VPN client is also required to connect the the RHIT wireless network at Rose-Hulman. You will need either the Windows XP client for your Laptop or the Pocket PC 2002 client for your iPaq. Students with a personal iPaq can purchase the required client from a third party. Instructions for obtaining and installing the VPN client for Windows XP can be found here. You will need your Rose-Hulman username and password to connect. Information on purchasing, installing, and using the VPN client for the Pocket PC can be found here. The Pocket PC client must be configured by the staff of IAIT.
