Are my files in webCafé backed up, or do I need to take action on my own regarding backups?
Most files in webCafé are backed up to a different server as soon as they arrive. However, we also replicate deletions to that server. Deleted files will go into the Recycle Bin, which for courses is emptied two weeks after the end of finals for course rooms, and and approximately once per year (during the summer, without notice) for non-course rooms.
Non-file items (such as polls are backed up once every day during the time when webCafé goes offline. Shortly afterward, the previous day's file backups are checked and written to tape.
The purpose of the backups is not so that individual files can be requested for restoration, but rather to ensure that as little data as possible will be lost in the event of a disaster that destroys webCafé or Wharton's computing infrastruction. Requests to attempt restoration of a permanently deleted file or archived eRoom must come from a Wharton faculty member; normally this can be done only for courses, and only on a "best efforts" basis. Because it is technically possible for someone to upload a file and then delete it from the Recycle Bin on the same day, we also can't guarantee a restore will successfully retrieve an accidentally deleted file. It is not possible to restore non-file items such as polls or calendar events, although most such deleted items will be in the Recycle Bin.
While room coordinators are not expected to back up all files in a webCafé room, we can't guarantee that the network will always be up. Thus, it's recommended that you have a "Plan B" for any file that is critical or needed for a presentation. While we make every effort to keep webCafé available at times other than the daily scheduled downtime, there may be network problems or other issues that may make webCafé temporarily unreachable. Thus, you will want to take the time to copy specific files that you know are critical to another computer, and (if you feel it's warranted) then back up those critical files to offline media such as a diskette or CD-R.
