Does webCafé have a way for students to download and submit take-home exams or assignments?
Yes, within a webCafé Classic room for a course, private folders for each student, each including a start timed assignment button, can be provided along with a special (Assignment Files) folder accessible solely by the teaching team. Each student's private folder will contain brief instructions and the start timed assignment button. A student's click of the start timed assignment button creates a date/time-stamped copy of your exam materials within that student's submission folder. It's not possible for a student to change that date/time stamp or get a "later" version of the same exam file. This way, you know the exact time at which the assignment file first became available to the individual student to download. If students are supposed to upload a file -- e.g., a Word document -- to complete the assignment, that file will be shown with its own date/time stamp in the "Modified" column. Thus, you can may compare the date/time stamps visually within each folder to see whether the student has roughly complied with the time limit. To date, instructors have relied more on a student's (implicit or written) assertion that he or she has followed established rules, rather than strict interpretations like "webCafé shows that you took 2 hours and 5 minutes, when 2 hours was the limit." In many cases instructors point out the applicable honor code or other academic policy that would govern compliance. It is necessary to visit each folder in order to compare time stamps; however, you can use the search feature of webCafé to bring together student-submitted exam files for copying and pasting without having to visit each folder. By clearing out the (Assignment Files) folder between uses, you may use this capability for multiple exams or timed assignments during a course. To request addition of this optional feature for your existing course room, please contact the webCafé Classic Team.
