Can I put a large video file on webCafé?
It's likely you have accessed video files on webCafé in the past. Most likely this was either a very small clip file (which was downloaded first, as described above) -- in a format like AVI, QuickTime or Windows Media -- or a link to another server, such as the Wharton Media Network in SPIKE, which streams video. Faculty may contact the Public Technology group for teaching-related video needs; videos, podcasts or MediaSite presentations requested through Public Technology for a course in the current semester will become available automatically through the Course Media on SPIKE link in the course room's Links & Resources folder. For non-course applications such as student organizations, often students will upload large files and hope that people can download them. The key limitation to understand regarding video in webCafé is that collaborative courseware servers do not have the capability either to stream video or to show it in a window within the webCafé page (like YouTube and other video-specific websites do). Most users will have to download each video file completely from webCafé before it can be viewed. Typically, viewing takes place in a separate application such as QuickTime or Windows Media Player. While there's not a set size limit for files in webCafé, we recommend not storing large video files within an eRoom; in fact, at times we may need to delete videos, MP3s and other which that are either too big to keep for an indefinite period of time or which violate copyright. You may also find that an upload of a large file is not possible from certain locations or over certain types of internet connections. To ensure the best video viewing experience, use a different site to host your video, and then make a link from webCafé to the page on the other site where your video appears. Here's how: Students who have made videos they wish to share, and who do not have tools for making streamable video files, can arrange for outside services which convert the camera's video format to a Web format. Usually these services also provide pages for the hosted video files which can then be linked in webCafé using the steps above. Here are some links to free video streaming and hosting sites:
