Can I put a large video file on webCafé?
It's likely you have accessed video files on webCafé in the past. Most likely this was either a very small clip file (which was downloaded first, as described above) -- in a format like AVI, QuickTime or Windows Media -- or a link to another server, such as the Wharton Media Network in SPIKE, which streams video. Faculty may contact the Public Technology group for teaching-related video needs. Their online request form includes an option to have a course's existing webCafé room include a link to the available Wharton Media Network videos for that course. For non-course applications such as student organizations, often students will upload large files and hope that people can download them. The key limitation to understand regarding video in webCafé is that our servers do not have the capability either to stream video or to show it in a window within the webCafé page (like YouTube does). Most users will have to download each video file completely, before it can be viewed; viewing takes place in a separate application such as QuickTime or Windows Media Player. For those reasons, whenever possible we recommend not storing large video files in webCafé; in fact, at times we may need to delete videos, MP3s and other files that are either too big or that violate copyright. You can use a different site to host a video file and then make a link from webCafé to the page on the other site where your video appears. Here's how: Students who have made videos they wish to share, and who do not have tools for making streamable video files, can arrange for outside services which convert the camera's video format to a Web format. Usually these services also provide pages for the hosted video files which can then be linked in webCafé using the steps above. Here are some links to free video streaming and hosting sites:
