Why are students able to post items in a course room's top-level folder, Course Materials folder or Course Calendar?
The default access control for anything in webCafé -- files, folders, calendars, discussions, etc. -- is that any member of the room can open it, but only you can edit it. However, the ability to open an item means that someone can create items or comments within it, provided that it is something that can contain other items (in other words, not a file, comment or Link). Thus, it is normal for webCafé that a student could post a new calendar event within the Course Calendar, or post a file under Course Materials. This doesn't mean that students can change the files, calendar events, comments, or other items posted by faculty. It just means that students can add to any "container" (e.g., a folder or calendar) that they can view. If you would want to "lock down" the room to prevent student posting there, you do have that ability through the "Read only" setting in Access Control. This can be done either to the room as a whole by applying "Read only" to the top-level folder (which is shown in the map with a Important Note: After you perform these steps, you will not be able to add or change anything in the room (or, if applied to a folder, contained within that folder) unless you temporarily turn off "Read only." To do that, repeat the same steps shown above, except that in step 2 you un-check the checkbox for "Read only." Also note that this would have to be performed on a per-folder basis; setting "Read only" on a particular folder does not set it for any sub-folders. To date there has not been a way for us to customize this aspect of the system. The defaults have worked well at Wharton for years; this is in keeping with the emphasis on use of webCafé as a collaborative tool, rather than just for one-way communication from faculty to students. icon), or to individual folders, as follows:
