How can I request a webCafé room for a Wharton course?
We are happy to provide webCafé rooms for courses that are part of academic Wharton programs in which the students are eligible for Wharton computing accounts as a result of enrollment in a section via the University Registrar. A request for a course webCafé room must come either from one of the instructors of the course, or from a member of an instructor's teaching team or support staff on behalf of that instructor. A student taking a course may not request webCafé for that course. If you would like to use webCafé in an MBA Program for Executives (MBA Exec, formerly known as WEMBA) course, please first contact the MBA Program for Executives office for the program in which you will be teaching (East or West Coast); they need to ask you some questions prior to the webCafé request being placed, which they can do for you. Note that Wharton computing accounts are required in order to access webCafé. Your enrolled non-Wharton students may obtain an account, starting approximately one week before the first day of the class, at: http://accounts.wharton.upenn.edu Your Wharton students will already have the necessary account; students who have taken a Wharton course recently may already have this account but may need to contact Wharton Computing Student Support to keep it active. We do need to hear from the instructor or teaching team for each semester in which they want to use webCafé. Unfortunately, it's not possible for anyone to place a "standing order" for automatic course room setup in future terms. This is in part because of the timing for when academic coordinators and program managers work with the Registrar's systems, and also so that our team can continue to advise you on new features, procedure changes, and the capability of having multiple course sections share a single site.
If you would like to have an eRoom for an Aresty Institute of Executive Education seminar, please contact execedhelp@wharton.upenn.edu. The Aresty Institute uses the facultyCafé eRoom server, which is managed by a different team.
Otherwise, to request a webCafé room for your course in any other Wharton curriculum, please write to webcafe@wharton.upenn.edu (or submit a Ticket on this site) with the following information:
Suggestion: When file copying is desired, we recommend the Copied option rather than Reused, especially when the same teaching team offers the course every successive term. This way you will receive fewer questions from students who recently took your course and are seeking restored access.
For administrative staff we do ask that course room membership be tied to planned activities in the webCafé collaborative space, rather than "nice to have / might possibly use it." Also, there's no need to specify computing support staff members or (for MBA Exec) program office access, as that is done automatically.
IMPORTANT NOTE: By default with webCafé Classic, teaching assistants will have access to your Instructor Folder, which is otherwise hidden from students. If you prefer that your teaching assistants should not have instructor-equivalent access -- for example, if your TAs are in the same academic program as the enrolled students and do not need to work with you in webCafé on grading or course content -- please mention that in your request.
