How do I edit a file?
You can edit files that you created or that others have given you permission to edit, provided that the file is also not reserved for editing by another user. Here's how:
- Right-click on the item or file you wish to change, then choose Edit from the pop-up menu. (You can also click the little square pencil-point
icon next to the file. If the pencil-point is not shown, click the commands button.)
- If you have not already saved changes to a copy of the file on your own computer, follow one of these steps depending on whether you use the eRoom plug-in software:
- If the plug-in is active, make your changes and then close the document (no need to use File/Save... or Save As...).
- If the plug-in is inactive, or if you are in Wharton's computing labs, follow the instructions shown on the Edit File screen carefully. "Edit it" will be selected, so press OK, open the file from the provided link, and (VERY IMPORTANT!) leave the browser window open while you are editing. After saving your changed file, click the Add button (not OK) to upload the changed file.
- If you have already saved a new version of the file on your computer, you can update the file in webCafé as follows:
- If the plug-in is active, drag the changed file from your computer and drop it directly onto the icon of the "old" file in webCafé. You'll be prompted to confirm the replacement of the file in webCafé.
- With either the plug-in inactive or active, you can replace the file in webCafé with the newly edited copy you just saved. From the Edit File screen (do Step 1 above if you're not already there), choose the third choice: "Replace it with a new version you've already created" (or, when version tracking is in use, "Add a new version you've already created").
Next, a Replace File or Add File screen will appear; click its Browse... button to bring up a pop-up file chooser. In that pop-up window, select the edited file that you saved in a folder on your computer, then click the Open button. This will dismiss that pop-up and show the directory and file name you just selected appears next to the Browse... button:

At this point you can press the OK button near the top of the Replace File or Add File screen, and your changed file will be saved to webCafé.
