<![CDATA[<p>What is a ".DS_Store" file, and why does it appear in <STRONG>web</STRONG></EM>Café</EM>? Can I delete this or prevent my Macintosh computer from causing it to appear?</p><p><span id="bodyfont"><p>Faculty and room coordinators may feel free to delete the <strong>.DS_Store</strong> file wherever it appears in <strong>web</strong><em>Café</em>. Its appearance is not a bug in <strong>web</strong><em>Café </em>but rather something which can occur when a Macintosh user transfers files to and from <strong>web</strong><em>Café</em> using the Finder.</p>
<p>The .DS_Store file is related to the Apple OS X operating system for Macintosh computers. This file is normally hidden within Mac OS X; it holds information about the current "view" of a folder window. Current and recent versions of Mac OS X will copy this file to remote folders, including <strong>web</strong><em>Café </em>rooms, folders, or other containers opened via the Finder's <em>Go > Connect to Server</em> function (also known as WebDAV).</p>
<p>If you are using the Finder's <em>Go > Connect to Server</em> function and use Mac OS X 1.4 or 1.5, please configure your Macintosh not to place the .DS_Store file on network-connected folders. The Apple support site explains the configuration steps here:<br />

If you are using an earlier version of Mac OS X with <strong>web</strong><em>Café</em>, please consider upgrading to the Mac OS X 1.6 "Snow Leopard" or newer versions; these will prevent .DS_Store from appearing.</p>
