Why isn't webCafé available for Penn student or alumni organizations?
The primary use of webCafé Classic rooms is for Wharton courses. Also, student organizations that are directly funded or recognized by the Wharton student governments (Wharton Council for undergraduates, WGA for MBA students) can request webCafé Classic rooms; we also consider requests from student groups that work with Wharton faculty and administrators on selected projects, although not all requests can be fulfilled. Membership in course rooms is under instructor control. For non-course rooms, access can be only for people who are currently taking classes at the Wharton School or who work in support of Wharton's academic mission. As a result of the policies surrounding new site provisioning and membership, along with related licensing issues, webCafé Classic tends not to fit the needs of SAC-funded groups (which must allow undergraduate membership across the various schools), University-wide organizations, or activities which require active online participation by alumni or non-Penn users. There are many good alternatives you might consider for an online group collaboration resource, including free services such as Google Groups or Office Live Workspace. Consult this Help & Support/FAQs article to learn more about alternatives to webCafé Classic.
