How do students join, change or leave teams using the Roster database in Team Signup?
Our Team Signup custom course tool consists of a join or change teams button above an eRoom database of teams shown in rows and columns. This database, usually entitled Roster (Sign Up Here), will be inside a folder that also contains hidden subfolders for each team.
The purpose of Team Signup is to help all students in a course quickly divide into mutually exclusive project teams (where each student is a member of only one of the available teams), each with a maximum size.
JOINING A TEAM
When a student visits the Roster, he or she may either be looking for fellow team members who have already joined one of the listed teams, or to "claim" an empty team that others will later join via their own signups.
Some teams (or, early on, all teams) in the Roster will not have any members. Others will have a few members already signed up, and some of those may be full (already comprising the number of members shown in the Max. Members column).
There are two ways to join a team:
After joining a team successfully, you will see a folder appear in the left-side navigation map of the webCafé room; this also appears under Your Hidden Items in the folder containing the Roster. This is the team's private folder; students on other teams will not see the folder or have access to its contents. In some courses, the team's private folder can be used for everyday working document sharing by the team members; in other courses, that folder should be used for submission of team assignments (in which case team members should click Create to set up a sub-folder for the working documents).
LEAVING YOUR CURRENT TEAM
To change from one team to another, use the same steps shown above under JOINING A TEAM. In a Standard signup, the list of available teams will include the words "By making a change through this screen, you will be leaving your current team."
A student may leave a team without joining another one by doing a Standard signup without selecting a team:
