What database does iInventory use & is it open to me?
iInventory offers you four alternative database formats. In all cases the database is open for you to browse and connect to. Many users take advantage of this uncommon feature to share data automatically with others, or to work on it without using the iInventory console. All your audit data within the database is open and accessible. Only some system tables (which should not be changed) are encrypted.
Microsoft Access 2000 (*.mdb) is the default format and does not require you to license or install Access.
Also free but for larger users (100+ records) is the free Microsoft SQL Server product 'MSDE' which allows an MSDE SQL database to be integrated with iInventory. For full details please article 1613-85.
You can also use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition which is a free download from Microsoft and is the next version of MSDE. Further details can be found here.
The fourth option is Microsoft SQL Server. This requires you to own a SQL Server license but it does not have to be installed on the same PC as iInventory. iInventory will need to connect to the SQL Server machine when required.
Note: As the iInventory database structure is open and easily accessible it is possible to connect them to most other large database formats (e.g. Oracle, DB2).
